Steps to Adopting a Greyhound

First and most important, we strongly encourage reading Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia Branigan and/or Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies by Lee Livingood. These books are available in most libraries, larger pet stores, bookstores, and on-line. Your Heart Bound adoption representative may also be able to loan a copy to you. We also recommend logging on to www.adopt-a-greyhound.org for more information about adopting.

After you have completed this reading, we ask that you complete our application that asks questions about your lifestyle, veterinarian, and personal references. We will review the application and check your references. We may also request a home visit by one of our representatives.

When your application is approved, you may select a dog from those currently available, or wait until we have one that best suits your lifestyle. If you have another dog, we will watch them interact with each other before completing the adoption.

Prior to placement, all greyhounds will be spayed or neutered, have vaccinations up to date, be checked for heartworms and other parasites, and have their teeth professionally cleaned. You may have to wait for this process to be completed before taking your dog home.

Heart Bound will also provide a Care Book, collar of your choice, muzzle, and on-going support to help your adoption succeed.
