Greyhounds Graduate from Prison Program

Heart Bound Greyhound Adoption, Inc. is proud to announce it has recently been accepted as an adoption partner by the National Greyhound Foundation’s 2nd Chance at Life Prison Program. This program places retired racing greyhounds in one of three prisons in Michigan, Indiana or Florida for a twelve-week training session. Two prisoners are assigned to each dog for basic obedience training as well as housebreaking, learning to walk up and down stairs, and to teach them what life is like off the track. The dogs are spayed or neutered and all of their veterinary work is completed before entering the program. Once the training is complete the dogs are placed with qualified adoption organizations to find their “forever homes.”

The 2nd Chance at Life Prison Program is a win/win program for all concerned. The dogs receive excellent care, training, love and a 2nd chance at life after their racing careers are over. Adoption groups receive very adoptable animals to place and adopters receive the “best of the best” dogs to become new family members. The prisoners, many of whom are long-term inmates, receive a respite from prison life and unconditional love that only an animal can provide.

This is a very spiritual program for the prisoners. They journal every detail about the dogs and how the animal’s love and trust changes them for the better. One testimonial from a man who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder says that not only have the suicidal thoughts diminished, but he has also been able to reduce his medications thanks to the greyhounds. Another older man states tearfully that he has been in prison for 30 plus years and has nothing except the unconditional love he receives from the dogs.

Heart Bound requires potential adopters to complete an application. Personal and veterinary references are checked when the application is submitted. Once the applicant is approved for adoption, they can choose from available dogs in the Heart Bound program. Those dogs may be from the Dairyland race track in Kenosha or from 2nd Chance at Life. There is a fee to adopt a retired racer. The fee covers all veterinary work that has been completed and includes a special martingale style collar, a care book, and follow-up contacts by the foster family to insure a successful placement. 2nd Chance at Life dogs also have their own care bag from their time in the prison program.
